Balayage vs. Highlights: Choosing Your Aveda Color in Inver Grove Heights

Two guests can walk in asking for the same sun-kissed blonde and leave with two completely different services. Understanding the difference between balayage and traditional highlights is the fastest way to get the color you actually pictured.

What balayage really is

Balayage is a freehand painting technique. Your colorist applies lightener directly to the surface of the hair, feathering the saturation so the lightest pieces land where the sun would naturally hit — around the face, along the mid-lengths, and through the ends. Because there is no hard start line, grow-out is soft and forgiving.

That softness is the single biggest reason guests love it. Most balayage clients stretch four to six months between color appointments, coming in only for a gloss and trim in between. If you want dimension without a strict maintenance calendar, balayage is usually the answer.

When foil highlights win

Foils create separation and heat, which means more lift, more brightness at the root, and more uniform coverage. If you want an all-over bright blonde, need to cover a stubborn band of regrowth, or are working through several sessions to lift dark or previously colored hair, foils get you there faster and more predictably.

Many of our color appointments are actually a hybrid — foils through the top and crown for brightness, balayage through the perimeter for movement. Your colorist will build the formula around your natural level, hair history and how often you realistically want to sit in the chair.

Aveda color and hair health

Every color service at OYESPA uses Aveda's plant-powered professional color, which is up to 96% naturally derived and essentially odor-free. We finish with a bond-supporting treatment and a custom gloss to seal the cuticle so your tone stays true instead of going brassy in week three.

At home, three habits protect your investment: wash with sulfate-free color-safe shampoo, turn the water temperature down, and use heat protectant every single time you style. Book a gloss at the eight-week mark and your color will read fresh for months.

Frequently asked

Questions & Answers

How long does a balayage appointment take?+

Plan on two to three hours, including toning and a blow-dry finish. Corrective work or going significantly lighter may require multiple sessions.

Is balayage cheaper than highlights?+

The individual service is often comparable, but balayage costs less over a year because you need fewer appointments.

Can I get balayage on dark hair?+

Yes. Dark hair takes beautifully to a caramel or bronde balayage. Reaching a very light blonde may need more than one visit to protect the integrity of the hair.

How soon can I wash my hair after color?+

Wait 48 hours if you can. That gives the cuticle time to close and locks in your tone.
